Merseyway Shines Bright: Three Prestigious Awards Celebrate Safety, Community, and Sustainability
Merseyway Shopping Centre has solidified its place as a beacon of excellence in Stockport, clinching three prestigious awards that reflect its commitment to safety, community engagement, and environmental sustainability. From fostering a culture of safety to transforming waste into art, Merseyway has truly set a benchmark on how to support the local community. Here’s a closer look at the recent achievements…
Merseyway’s commitment to the well-being of its visitors and staff has earned a RoSPA Health and Safety Award. Acknowledging organisations that go above and beyond in implementing safety measures and fostering a culture of care, by earning this award, Merseyway joins an esteemed group of organisations that prioritise the health, safety, and overall well-being of everyone who steps through their doors.
RoSPA Awards are about more than just recognition—they represent a commitment to setting new standards of excellence in safety. For Merseyway, this accolade is a testament to the tireless efforts of its management and staff in ensuring a safe, welcoming environment for all.
The Giving Tree Initiative is an inspiring testament to the power of community and the spirit of giving. This initiative, which sees Merseyway supporting the local community each Christmas, has earned the centre a Stockport Business Award.
Every holiday season, Merseyway invites visitors to donate gifts via a Giving Tree, ensuring that countless families in need experience the magic of Christmas. This initiative has touched the lives of many, embodying the true essence of generosity and community spirit. The Stockport Business Award recognises the enduring impact of the Giving Tree and the essential role Merseyway plays in uniting the Stockport community during the festive season.
Merseyway’s third accolade, the Green Apple Award, celebrates its innovative approach to environmental sustainability. At the heart of this achievement is the creation of the UK’s largest recycled plastic lid mural—a breathtaking piece of public art that not only showcases Stockport’s endangered wildlife and iconic landmarks but also highlights the urgent need to address plastic waste pollution.
Brought to life by local artist Caitlin Atherton, founder of Plastic Shed, with support from the CBRE Property Management Team and Merseyway Shopping Centre, this massive mural spans an impressive 18m x 4m wall adjacent to Primark. The mural was constructed using approximately 80,000 plastic bottle lids donated by the community over five months. The project also utilised 100% recycled plastic boards and donated screws, ensuring every component aligned with the overarching environmental message.
Funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), the mural serves as a bold statement about the beauty of creative expression and the critical need for ecological responsibility. By transforming discarded plastic waste into a striking work of art, Merseyway and Plastic Shed have sent a powerful message about the importance of reducing plastic waste and the difference a united community can make.
These three awards exemplify Merseyway’s unwavering dedication to making a positive impact. From ensuring the safety of its shoppers and fostering a spirit of generosity, to championing sustainability through ground-breaking public art, Merseyway continues to set an inspiring example for shopping centres across the UK.
