JD opens new Stockport store!

JD announces opening date for new Stockport store

JD, the UK’s leading sports-fashion retailer, will open the doors to its brand-new store in Stockport this (Thursday 3rd October).

Occupying 13,000 sq ft of the former BHS building in Merseyway shopping centre, the store will feature a fresh, modern design, delivering the latest JD store environment where customers can shop the best brands in sport and streetwear including Nike, Adidas, The North Face, Under Armour, Berghaus, Jordan, Puma and more.

The opening follows hot on the heels of a brand-new 9,000 sq ft Poundland which opened last month in the same building which has been completely refurbished and transformed into prime, state-of-the-art retail space.

The new, larger JD store, which replaces the retailer’s two existing stores within the town centre, will also see the creation of an additional 10 new jobs.

Cllr Colin MacAlister, Cabinet Member for Economy and Regeneration at Stockport Council, said: “It’s fantastic to see the transformation of the old BHS building with the opening of JD and the recent opening of Poundland. This is a big step forward in our long-term plans for Merseyway, showing how we’re rethinking the use of these spaces to bring new life into the town centre. With many department stores closing nationally, it’s about more than just retail now – we’re thinking outside the box to create places that inspire creativity and innovation.

“New spaces like the Merseyway Innovation Centre and the upcoming Stockroom are great examples of our town centre regeneration approach. These projects and upcoming events, such as Stockport Spectacular, bring the community together and make Stockport a place people want to visit, work, and live in.

“The fact that we’re still attracting big-name retailers, even in challenging times, says a lot about the positive momentum here. Stockport has started to shine, and Merseyway is right at the heart of that. It’s all part of our ‘One Stockport, One Future’ vision to make the town a vibrant, modern destination for everyone as we look to make Stockport one of the best places in the country to live a happy and healthy life.”

Victoria Nichol, Merseyway Centre Manager said: “The opening of the new JD store is testament to our ongoing commitment to ensure high quality retail at the centre. It’s a well-loved brand in the town and we’re confident our visitors will be impressed by their new store which will offer a fantastic shopping experience.”

James Air, Director, Head of Group Acquisitions at JD said: “We can’t wait to open our brand-new store at Merseyway. We’ve always had a great connection with Stockport and the North West and are pleased to be investing in a large, state of the art store with an enhanced product range. We’re very much looking forward to welcoming everyone to our new store.”

The new JD store at Merseyway opens on Thursday 3rd October. To celebrate, shoppers can enjoy live DJ sets while they browse on Friday 4th October and on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th customers can test their skills with the Batak Challenge – a high-energy game putting reflexes and hand to eye coordination to the test with prizes for those who top the leader board.

Retail consultants Barker Proudlove have supported Stockport Council on both lettings.
