Pop-up Uniform Shop

Merseyway Shopping Centre proves school uniforms don’t need to be a huge expense as hundreds of Stockport parents send children back to school in top-quality secondhand clothing

Hundreds of Stockport-based children have headed back to school this week in good quality, secondhand uniform as Merseyway Shopping Centre’s pop-up uniform shop once again, proves to be a huge success.

Selling over 5,000 items of secondhand uniform donated by the local community, The Pop-Up Uniform Shop was open for eight days during August, helping parents prepare for the new academic year.

Selling clean and preloved school items for a small donation of just 50p per item, the shop managed to raise over £1,160 for local food bank, Chelwood Food Bank Plus, and Great Ormond Street Hospital via the UK wide annual charity fundraising day, One Great Day.

The entire project was run and managed by volunteers from the Merseyway team, CBRE, Stockport Council and Merseyway tenants, who volunteered over 486 hours of their personal time to help sort and merchandise the shop, helping to provide local parents with massive savings, whilst also providing a sustainable option for families looking at ways to help the environment.

Merseyway Centre Manager, Victoria Nichol said: “With living costs still on the rise in the UK, we feel it’s our responsibility to help our community in the best way we can. The Uniform Shop was a huge success in 2022 and we received lots of requests from shoppers for its return this year. Not only did we see an increase in uniform donations, but we also saw a huge increase in shoppers and charity donations too. The funds raised will all go back into the community, with monies being split 50% for each of our chosen charities. This project really is close to our hearts, and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who donated and to all the members of staff who donated their time to this fantastic campaign.”
