MERSEYWAY PUTS THE WHEELS IN MOTION AS SHOPMOBILITY RETURNS TO
THE CENTRE
Merseyway Shopping Centre has announced the return of its Shopmobility service, offering free daily access to mobility scooters and wheelchairs for shoppers from Monday 2nd June 2025.
Funded by Stockport Council, the scheme will run seven days a week and is designed to support visitors with limited mobility, ensuring everyone can shop and dine with confidence and ease.
The relaunched service will be completely free to use and is available on a first-come, first-served basis. All equipment is fully insured, safe, and easy to operate, making it ideal for anyone needing a little extra support while navigating around the shopping centre.
The return of Shopmobility is part of a wider programme to improve accessibility and inclusion at Merseyway. Recent upgrades include the opening of best-in-class public toilets, changing facilities and a dedicated prayer room, all designed to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for every visitor.
Cllr Mark Roberts, Leader of Stockport Council, said, “Ensuring that Stockport is an accessible and welcoming destination for everyone is really important and I’m pleased that we are bringing Shopmobility back to Merseyway, offering vital support for those who need it. With Stockroom opening on 24th May, we are transforming our town centre into a vibrant and inclusive place that meets the needs of all our residents and visitors.”
Victoria Nichol, Centre Manager at Merseyway said, “We’re delighted to welcome Shopmobility back to Merseyway. This service plays a vital role in making the centre more accessible for all, and we’re proud to be working with Stockport Council to support our local community. Combined with our recent facilities improvements, it marks a significant step in making Merseyway a more inclusive place to shop, relax and connect.”
The scheme aligns with the mission of ShopMobility UK, a national network committed to improving independence for people with restricted mobility. By offering free and easy access to mobility aids, Merseyway is helping to ensure that everyone- regardless of age or ability – can enjoy the shopping centre to its fullest.
To book a mobility aid, visitors can call the Merseyway Security Team on 0161 480 2839.
